Gender Reveal Poppers: Types, How They Work and Which to Choose

Pink and blue Confettified gender reveal confetti and holi powder poppers with confetti and coloured powder

A gender reveal popper is one of the most satisfying ways to announce your baby's sex. Hold it, point it up, twist, and a burst of pink or blue fills the air. But the word "popper" covers a few different products, and picking the wrong type for your venue can leave you with a disappointing reveal or a big clean up.

This guide covers the gender reveal poppers we sell in Australia, what each one does, and exactly which to choose for your reveal, whether you are planning an intimate moment at home or a big outdoor celebration.

What Is a Gender Reveal Popper?

"Popper" is the everyday name Australians give to a gender reveal cannon: a handheld CO2 launcher. You hold the base, twist, and compressed CO2 gas releases and propels the fill out in a burst. The fill (confetti, holi powder or a combination) is what creates the reveal.

At Confettified we use the words "popper" and "cannon" interchangeably because they describe the same product. What changes is what is loaded inside. Every Confettified confetti cannon holds at least 60g of confetti, and a standard cannon shoots at least 6 metres and up to 10 metres, about 8 metres on average.

Three things to understand before you buy:

  • Whether a popper suits indoors or outdoors depends on the fill, not the CO2 cartridge.
  • The fill material determines whether the reveal suits your venue.
  • Not all fills are appropriate for every setting, so read the types below carefully before you order.

Types of Gender Reveal Poppers

1. Paper Confetti Poppers

A paper confetti popper fires a burst of light tissue paper slips that float gently through the air. It is the most versatile option and suits most venues, indoors or outdoors. Our standard paper confetti is flame retardant and naturally biodegradable.

The Gender Reveal Confetti Cannon is $29.95 in pink or blue. Browse the full confetti cannon range to compare fills.

2. Holi Powder Poppers

Holi powder poppers fire a cloud of coloured powder. The visual effect is dramatic: a billowing cloud of pink or blue that photographs beautifully outdoors. Our holi powder is made from corn flour.

Holi powder is flammable, so keep it away from flames, sparklers and candles. Holi powder poppers are for outdoor use only. Indoors, the powder spreads through the air and settles on soft furnishings, carpet and air conditioning, making clean up very difficult.

The Surprise Smoke Gender Reveal Cannon is $34.95 in pink or blue. For a bigger outdoor moment, the Gender Reveal Powder Mega Smoke Blaster ($107.99) projects coloured powder up to 10 metres for about 15 seconds, and the Gender Reveal Powder Mini Smoke Blaster is $49.95. Browse every option in our holi powder cannon range, and read does holi powder stain before you choose your outfit.

3. Smoke Bombs and Smoke Emitters

Smoke bombs and smoke emitters are a separate category from CO2 twist cannons. Instead of a single burst, they release a steady stream of coloured smoke. The Gender Reveal Smoke Bomb/Grenade Emitter ($29.95) smokes for at least 60 seconds, and most last up to 90 seconds. The colour is not a surprise, so have a friend who knows the result buy it and hand it over.

Smoke products are for outdoor use only and can get hot. Never use smoke indoors. See the full smoke emitter collection.

4. Combination Options

Several of our gender reveal cannons and poppers combine fills. The Confetti & Smoke Gender Reveal Cannon ($34.95) fires paper confetti and holi powder from a single tube, so you get both floating colour and a cloud for photos. Bundles such as the Gender Reveal Smoke & Confetti Cannon Bundle start from $56.95 for a Twin Pack. Because it contains holi powder, treat a combination popper like a holi powder popper: outdoors only and away from flames.

What about eco or metallic confetti?

We do not currently sell gender reveal poppers with eco or metallic fills, so our gender reveal confetti poppers use standard paper confetti. If you are browsing our wider eco confetti cannon range for another event, note that eco rice paper confetti is not flame retardant, so keep it away from candles and open flames.

Choosing the Right Type for Your Setting

Your venue is the main deciding factor. Here is a quick guide:

For an Indoor Venue (Home, Restaurant, Function Hall)

Use a paper confetti popper such as the Gender Reveal Confetti Cannon. Remember it can travel up to 10 metres, so choose a room with plenty of space and height, and check your venue's rules first.

Do not use holi powder, combination poppers or smoke indoors. They are designed for open air use only.

For an Outdoor Venue (Backyard, Park, Beach, Farm)

Outdoor reveals give you every option. Paper confetti gives a classic floating burst, holi powder creates a dramatic cloud for photos and video, and smoke bombs deliver lingering colour that suits a photographer setup. Check local council rules for parks and beaches, and pick up confetti once the photos are done.

How Many Poppers Do You Need?

For a couple revealing together, one popper each is plenty. For a small reveal group shot, 2 to 4 poppers is the sweet spot: one or two for the parents and a couple for family who want to join in.

For a bigger crowd or a photographer shooting from several angles, a bundle makes it simple. The Gender Reveal Confetti Cannon Bundle comes as a Twin Pack ($56.95), Quad Pack ($108.85) or Eight Pack ($169.32).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a gender reveal popper and a gender reveal cannon?

In Australia, both terms refer to the same product: a CO2 powered twist launcher that fires confetti, holi powder or a combination into the air. Popper and cannon are used interchangeably across our gender reveal range.

How far does a gender reveal popper shoot?

A standard cannon shoots at least 6 metres and up to 10 metres, about 8 metres on average, so give yourself open space above and around you.

Can I use a gender reveal popper indoors?

Yes, with a paper confetti fill and enough space and ceiling height. Holi powder, combination poppers and smoke are for outdoor use only and should never be used indoors.

How do gender reveal poppers work?

You hold the base firmly, point the cannon upward and away from people, and twist in the direction of the arrows. The twist triggers a controlled CO2 release that propels the contents into the air. See our full guide on how gender reveal poppers work.

Are gender reveal poppers safe?

Yes, when used as directed. Point the cannon away from faces and bodies before twisting, keep your arms extended, and follow the direction arrows. Holi powder is made from corn flour and is flammable, so keep it away from flames, sparklers and candles, and use holi powder and smoke outdoors only.

Can you take a gender reveal popper on a plane?

Our poppers contain a small CO2 cartridge and are classed as DG2.2, so they must go in checked luggage, never carry on. Airlines set their own rules, so always confirm with your airline before you fly, or have your poppers delivered to your destination. See our guide to taking a confetti cannon on a plane.

Do gender reveal poppers stain?

Our paper confetti does not stain clothing or skin. For holi powder, read our guide on whether holi powder stains before choosing what to wear.
