Does Holi Powder stain?
Does Holi Powder Actually Stain?
Confettified holi powder is made from plant-based cornstarch with non-toxic dyes. It washes out of most fabrics in a standard cold wash without any extra effort. Staining is not something you should experience with our powder.
However, not all holi powders are the same. Cheaper products sometimes use synthetic dyes that can set into fabric, particularly if they sit for a long time before washing or if a low water wash cycle is used. If you have used another brand and are dealing with a stain, the five methods below should help.
Most of us love a good colour run even though there is a lot of confusion surrounding how to get holi powder and holi colours out of clothes. Whether you call it confetti smoke, haze or colourful powder, it is all great fun until you find yourself scrubbing clothes in the laundry. Here is what actually works.
Five Methods for Removing Holi Powder Stains
1. Bleach Your Whites
It may seem obvious, but holi powder always shows best on white clothes. The good news: you can simply bleach whites in warm to hot water with bleach added. Do not include any coloured clothes or they may bleach out too. For coloured garments, choose a non-chlorinated bleach product.
2. White Vinegar
Add around 150ml (just over half a cup) of white vinegar and a heaped teaspoon of Vanish or Napisan to 3 litres of cold water. The acidity of the vinegar helps the Napisan lift colour from the fabric.
3. Windex White
Spray the clear version of Windex directly onto any stained area. Let it soak for around 15 minutes, then dab with a clean cloth or paper towel. Rinse and wash as normal.
4. Lemon Juice
Lemons are well known for their natural cleaning properties. Soak the stained area in lemon juice for 15 minutes, scrub gently by hand, then wash as normal.
5. Methylated Spirits (Metho)
Use this method with care. Methylated spirits should not contact skin or eyes. Rub a small amount onto the affected area, rinse thoroughly under cold water, then wash as normal.
Additional Tips for Cleaning Holi Powder
- Act fast. The longer powder sits on fabric, the harder it is to remove. If the fabric is dry clean only, take it to a dry cleaner and explain what the stain is.
- Wear gloves. Most stain removal chemicals are harsh on skin. A cheap toothbrush is useful for applying product to small areas.
- Wash stained items separately. Never mix two stain removal products in the same wash. If the stain does not come out in the first wash, try again before drying as heat can set the stain permanently.
- Use a full water cycle. Do not use an eco or low water setting. You want maximum water to fully rinse out both the powder and any residual chemicals.
- Avoid chlorine bleach on coloured clothes. It will discolour and damage the fabric.
More Questions About Holi Powder
Do holi colours wash off clothes?
Yes. Confettified holi colours are made from plant-based cornstarch and wash out of most fabrics in a standard cold machine wash. If you have used a cheaper brand with synthetic dyes and colours are not coming out, try the white vinegar or Napisan method above before reaching for anything harsher.
Does holi powder stain grass?
No. Confettified holi powder is plant-based cornstarch that dissolves on contact with water and washes into the lawn with the first rainfall or a quick hose down. It is safe for lawns and gardens with no residue left behind.
Does holi powder wash off skin?
Yes, easily. Cornstarch based holi powder rinses off skin in the shower without scrubbing. For sensitive skin, rinse promptly rather than letting it sit.
Can you use holi powder indoors?
We recommend outdoors for best results. Holi powder creates a fine cloud that can settle on furniture and fabrics indoors. For indoor gender reveals or celebrations, our biodegradable confetti cannons are a better option. Rice paper confetti is easy to sweep up and leaves no residue on surfaces.
